I Have MassHealth. Do I Still Get PIP Coverage?

Some drivers in Massachusetts receive MassHealth insurance benefits. MassHealth is a public health insurance program for low to middle income residents.

When a person who is covered by MassHealth is injured in a car accident, they do have PIP coverage available to them to pay their medical bills and lost wages. Having MassHealth does not disqualify them from getting PIP benefits.

Co-ordinating your MassHealth insurance benefits with PIP coverage is a little different than co-ordinating private health insurance with PIP. For purposes of PIP coverage, MassHealth is not considered private health insurance. So, your PIP coverage remains the primary source of medical bill coverage up to the maximum PIP benefits available to you for the accident – which is generally $8,000.

If you are MassHealth recipient who is injured in a car accident and you have questions about what will be covered under your PIP policy, be sure to consult with an experienced personal injury and PIP coverage attorney to learn your rights.
